Samsung has launched a new high-end flip phone (clamshell phone) with dual screens.
Samsung launched the smartphone in China, Samsung targets the Leadership 8 flip-phone at the premium segment of the market. It was previously known to us as the SM-G9298.
Samsung is yet to confirm the exact price and availability date of the “Leadership 8” in China. Sadly, the clamshell smartphone is exclusive to China Mobile meaning there are very low chance that this smartphone is going to launch in other markets soon or at all.
The latest flip-phone from Samsung should be seen as the successor to the SM-2017, which was launched last year.
About the design, the clamshell phone is made with black metal finish with accents of gold. The top shell has the SIM slot, while the bottom shell has the volume rocker on the right and power button on the left. On the inside, it has a physical alpha-numeric keypad with d-pad navigator and other shortcut keys. On the back it has finger-print sensor, camera and LED flash.
The flip smartphone features two 4.2-inch Full-HD (1920 x 1080) Super AMOLED displays – one on the inside and one on the outside.
It is powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor paired with 4GB RAM. It has 64GB of internal storage which can be further expanded via microSD card.
On the camera front, the flip phone features a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with f 1.7 aperture and a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter.
It is backed by a 2300mAh battery with fast charging and wireless charging support.
For the connectivity, it has dual SIM support LTE support, micro USB port, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, and GPS.
It comes in black color option and the price and availability date aren’t provided by Samsung as of yet.
The Leadership 8 runs on latest Android with Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI and it supports Samsung Pay mobile payments, an Always-on display, a multi-function configurable hotkey, S Voice, Secure Folder, and a rear mounted fingerprint scanner.
It seems Samsung hasn’t given up on flip phones, as it still has market for such devices in both China and Korea.
Earlier this year, in June, Samsung launched the Galaxy Folder 2 in South Korea. It is a mid-end flip phone, featuring a single 3.8-inch display, an old-school type keyboard, a quad-core processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. It costs 297,000 Korean won (or approx Rs 16,772).
