Sharp announced the Aquos S2 smartphone at an event in Beijing. It is a premium mid-range device with looks, build quality and features. We know that Sharp’s name in smartphone world isn’t that big but they know how to build great consumer products – this smartphone proves it.
The display is the main highlight of the new phone. It is bezel-less on three sides with a slight cutout on the top for the camera. The display is 5.5 inches and it has an amazing 2,040 x 1,080 resolution with 135-percent sRGB color gamut, plus it is very bright having 550-nit brightness.
The S2 has an impressive 87.5-percent screen-to-body ratio. We are talking about fitting a 5.5-inch display into the body of a conventional 4.9-inch smartphone – isn’t it impressive.
Design wise the device looks beautiful from the front and back, it has glossy rear (a premium glass one for higher variant), most of the front is taken by display, there are two rear cameras on the smartphone.
Interestingly, it has a fingerprint print sensor placed on the front below the display which the best position to place a fingerprint sensor if you ask us.
The Sharp Aquos S2 is the first smartphone to come with the new Snapdragon 630 chipset. The new chipset is built on the 14 nm process and has eight Cortex-A53 cores; four clocked at 2.2 GHz and four more at 1.8 GHz. The GPU is Adreno 508 and has X12 LTE modem.
The Sharp Aquos S2 comes in 2 variants, one with Snapdragon 630 chipset and a better variant with Snapdragon 660 chipset.
The difference between the two apart from the processor is the memory, storage and pricing. The standard version has 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage while the premium one has 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.
It has a dual camera system on the back which is vertically positioned. The sensors are 12 MP and 8 MP with 1.4um pixels and f/1.75 aperture, which together offers seven-level bokeh effect. Dual LED flash is also present on the rear of the device.
There’s an 8 MP camera on the front 1.4um sensor with f/2.0 aperture which impressive if we look at the size of the module.
The Aquos S2 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat and is backed by a good sized 3,030 mAh battery.
The standard model with Snapdragon 630, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage is priced at 2,499 yuan (about $370), and it comes in black, white, blue or mint green.
The premium model will arrive sometime later and is priced at 3,499 yuan (about $520) and packs a Snapdragon 660, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage plus the aforementioned “3D” glass back A global rollout is expected on August 14.
